The Cleveland Spiders competed in the National League from 1889 to 1899, becoming one of baseball's strongest clubs during the 1890s. Playing at League Park and later Robison Field, the Spiders featured an extraordinary roster that included Hall of Famers Cy Young, Jesse Burkett, Bobby Wallace, and Cupid Childs.

During their prime, the Spiders were among baseball's elite teams. They captured the 1895 Temple Cup Championship—the predecessor to the modern World Series—and regularly finished among the National League's top clubs. Their dominant pitching, led by Cy Young, helped establish Cleveland as one of baseball's early powerhouses.

The franchise is equally remembered for its historic 1899 season, when team owners transferred nearly all of the club's star players to their other National League franchise, the St. Louis Perfectos. Left with an inexperienced roster, the Spiders endured a 20–134 record, still the worst winning percentage in Major League Baseball history. Forced to play most of their schedule on the road due to extremely low attendance, the team's unforgettable final season became one of baseball's most enduring legends.

Despite that infamous ending, the Cleveland Spiders remain one of baseball's most iconic nineteenth-century clubs, remembered not only for their record-setting struggles but also for the championship-caliber teams and Hall of Fame talent that preceded them.
