The Baltimore Terrapins competed in the Federal League from 1914 to 1915, representing Baltimore during the league's ambitious attempt to become a third major league alongside the American and National Leagues. Playing their home games at Terrapin Park, the club attracted talented players by offering competitive salaries and challenging baseball's reserve clause.
The Terrapins featured standout stars such as Jack Quinn, Otto Knabe, and Chief Bender, competing against fellow Federal League clubs including the Chicago Whales, St. Louis Terriers, Pittsburgh Rebels, and Brooklyn Tip-Tops. Although Baltimore finished near the bottom of the standings, the team played an important role in one of professional baseball's greatest business battles.
When the Federal League folded after the 1915 season, the Terrapins became central figures in one of the most significant legal cases in sports history. The franchise's ownership filed an antitrust lawsuit against organized baseball, resulting in the landmark 1922 U.S. Supreme Court decision Federal Baseball Club v. National League, which granted Major League Baseball its long-standing antitrust exemption.
Though the Terrapins existed for only two seasons, their legacy helped shape the business and legal structure of professional baseball for generations.
